2016 Brew Madness

0
0

March Madness is just around the corner, and since Colorado isn’t exactly brimming with basketball talent – we here at Elevation Outdoors Magazine have decided to run a bracket focused on something this state is good at: making good beer.

Round 1 of the Elevation Outdoors Magazine Brew Madness poll beings on
February 29 and will run through April 11. Through six rounds of
voting, we’ll ask our readers to help narrow down 64 craft beers
featured in four different categories (Dark, Hoppy, Strong, and
Session) until only one beer remains. The championship brew will be
featured in our May of 2016 print issue.

Use #EObeerbracket and #COBrewMadness to help us spread the good word. Post tasting photos on EO’s Facebook page for a chance to win some
swag!

The timeline for voting is as follows:

Round 1: Feb. 29 – March 7
Round 2: March 8 – 14
Round 3: March 15 – 21
Round 4: March 22 – 28
Round 5: March 29 – April 4
Round 6: April 5 – 11

Fine Print – You can vote 1x per day. Each brewery will start at zero
votes at the beginning of each round.

Best Sixer Ever Winners Announced–The best Colorado beer is here!

And in the end there were six.

The best Colorado beer is here. After weeks of battling, the first ever Elevation Outdoors create your ultimate six-pack of Colorado beers reader poll has wrapped up. It was not easy to choose from the numerous brews nominated by the 32 participating breweries. Luckily, we, the editors, did not have to take on that task—you did. Now, it’s time to sit back and enjoy the victors, or take them with you the next time you go outside and play. So without further ado here are the winners.

Every well-stocked beer fridge across the Rocky Mountains must have at least one IPA in it—seriously look it up, I think it’s a state law. Drinkers across the country have embraced these humongous hop-bombs over the last decade making them the hottest style of craft beer. According to the Brewers Association, they were up a whopping 47 percent last year. Just think about that number. That’s on top of continual growth, it’s crazy. It seems like brewers are turning out new ones daily.

Well luckily for Coloradoans, the folks at Ska Brewing in Durango have been turning out one of the very best. Their Modus Hoperandi IPA is a beautifully balanced beer with an incredible citrus nose. It’s the ideal brew to crack open after a day on the slopes or an afternoon watching the game. It also was the top vote-getter in our poll. You named in a whopping 41 percent of your six packs.

On the opposite end of the beer spectrum is Milk Stout Nitro. It garnered the second most votes in our poll. A velvety-smooth beer with prevalent flavors of chocolate and vanilla with a touch of roasted coffee, it’s a drink you just don’t want to put down. The nitrogen that infuses the beer creates a seriously silky stout that goes down so smooth. The fact that Left Hand Brewing has created a way to deliver their nitrogenated beers to you direct in the bottle virtually guarantees them a place in most peoples dream six-pack. When the temps drop after the sun settles, this is one beer you will want in your cooler when car camping.

With a strong malty backbone balanced by a generous hoppy kick, Upslope Brewing’s Brown Ale is the perfect beer for spring drinking. It delivers a full-body taste that’s not too complex, but offers layers of subtle flavors. The hints of coffee and chocolates will help you ward off the chill while the 45 IBU’s mean it will deliver a crisp finish. Though only six-and-a-half years old, the brewers at Upslope have been pulling in accolades and awards since they first opened their doors. Make sure you have this beer in your cooler when you are headed out for an adventure.

One of the biggest new trends of the craft beer revolution is the emergence of session beers. These are brews loaded with the great flavors we have come to expect in micro beers, but not weighed down by the high alcohol content so often found in them. You can crack them open with friends and not worry about getting too buzzed after a couple cold ones. Odell Brewing’s Loose Leaf is just such a beer. Crisp, refreshing, and quite pleasing, it will leave you smiling after quaffing a few with friends. With only 4.5 percent alcohol by volume, it is the perfect beer to share with friends after a long mountain bike ride at the trailhead. Make sure you have this excellent session ale in your fridge.

Sometimes, it’s best to reach for a classic—hey, they never seem to go out of style. At least that seems to be the story with Dales Pale Ale. Big, bold and aggressive would be how many describe it. A crisp finish leaves your taste buds begging for more nicely balances its huge floral undertone. Consistently considered one of the best beers in America—and the one that launched the current craze of canning craft beer—it is a trendsetter. It is a large part of the reason Oskar Blues Brewery is now the 24th largest craft brewery in the United States. If you are heading out for a day in the backcountry, it is one beer you will want with you.

The final beer rounding out our Best Sixer Ever was something of a Cinderella story. Knocking off perennial powers Avery, Great Divide and Breckenridge, it seems to be a beer destined for success. Brewed with a complex array of spices, Denver Beer Company’s Graham Cracker Porter is one of the more interesting beers on the market today. This American Porter is well balanced with vanilla sweetness balanced out by the dark roasted malts evident in any well-made porter. The fact that it is available in cans—not too many well crafted porters are—and that it is only available in Colorado right now, makes this a must-have when heading out on your next adventure.

So there you have it, six excellent brews to consider for your next outing. So pack up the gear, put the dog in the back, and go have some fun.

In their efforts to support a global movement towards outdoor exploration, The North Face announced the final winners of their 2015 Explore Fund Program Awards this week. This program will be providing grant funding to 47 different non-profit organizations throughout the U.S. who use outdoor exploration as the catalyst for positive, personal or societal change. With over $1.5 million in funding provided to more than 300 different organizations in the past five years, the program aims to inspire the next generation of outdoor explorers and conservationist.

“We reviewed nearly 500 applications for Explore Fund grants this year and each of them were unique and powerful,” reflected Ann Krcik, a senior director of Outdoor Exploration at The North Face. Projects chosen to receive part of the $500,000 being awarded this year include non-profits such as Leave No Trace, The Children and Nature Network, and Latino Outdoors.

“Our organization is in a stage of rapid growth and the grant comes at a momentous time,” expressed Graciela Cabello, national director of Latino Outdoors. This organization focuses on supporting outdoor leadership capacity-building opportunities for youth and young adults in the Latino community and plans to use the funds implement a statewide leadership program and lead more excursions.

Founded in 1966, The North Face introduced the grant in 2010 and hopes to offer it again next year.  “We are really humbled by all the incredible work inspiring the next generation of outdoor explorers,” said Krcik.  For more information about the Explore Fund, please visit www.explorefund.org.

Top Adventure School finalist: Colorado Mountain College

0
0

In our July/August 2015 issue, we had readers vote for what they thought was the most adventurous college, and now we’re back with more valuable information on why these schools made the final rounds. Each finalist shared with us where their students like to play, what their students like to study and what the culture is like at the school.

Colorado Mountain College (CMC)
Imagine a place where the Rocky Mountains are literally right out your doorstep and while playing in the mountains you can also get your degree. Now, what if we told you this place is real, and it’s called Colorado Mountain College. CMC has locations throughout the Western Slope, but we’re going to focus on their Aspen campus, Steamboat Springs campus, Rifle campus and Edwards campus.

CMC Aspen campus:
Need we say more? Aspen offers tons of outlets for outdoor activities and CMC is right in the heart of it. With four ski mountains and the Roaring Fork River running through town, the outdoor adventures are limitless.

What to study: Visual Art
CMC Aspen offers a plethora of art galleries and art exhibits for students, and they offer classes that have local renowned artists adjacent to faculty. During the annual WinterXGames and the annual Ideas Fest, students from the Isaacson School for New Media assist in documenting the events through numerous outlets like images, interviews and video.

Where to play during winter:
As mentioned above, Aspen is home to four world class ski resorts. Buttermilk, Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands and Snowmass are all within walking distance of campus. Yes, that means students are likely skiing or snowboarding before class and during breaks. Aspen also offers 60 miles of free nordic trails and backcountry options.

Where to play during summer:
The phrase “came for the winter but stayed for the summer” couldn’t be more relevant than in Aspen. During the summer, there are plenty of mountain biking options that include Sky Mountain Park, the Rio Grande bike trail to Glenwood and Independence Pass. Want to run instead? Aspen offers one of the most challenging trail running competition known as the Power of Four trail run. If you’re feeling extra adventurous, Aspen is home to four of the most difficult 14ers in the state. Capital Peak, Snowmass Peak, Pyramid Peak and Maroon Bells attract climbers from all over the world, and they’re just minutes from town. More of a water person? Aspen has that too. Kayak down the Roaring Fork river or fly fish the Frying Pan river only 20 miles down the road.

Culture:
CMC Aspen is home to the Santa Fe Ballet as well as year-long art exhibits. Students also like to participate in poetry slams and other creative writing events such as Writ Large. Writ Large is put on by the Isaacson School and brings live storytelling to Aspen.

CMC Steamboat Springs campus:
Steamboat Springs couldn’t be a more perfect place for those who want to be a ski bum, but also want to get a degree at the same time. And CMC Steamboat offers degrees that relate directly to the ski bum lifestyle, like how to make skis. Where can we sign up?

What to Study: Sustainability, Outdoor Education, Ski and Snowboard Business
For students who want to make skis and snowboards, look no further. The Steamboat Springs Ski and Snowboard program is endorsed by Snowsports Industries America, and they help students learn how to market, sell and produce their line of skis or snowboards. Steamboat’s outdoor education program is also highly successful. Two recent grads are on a 5,200 mile canoe expedition from the Gulf of Mexico to the Arctic Ocean. Pretty cool, right? For those studying sustainability, Steamboat offers many internships at their non-profit organizations that are centered around environmental and sustainability issues.

Where to play during winter:
Steamboat Ski Resort is literally a stone’s throw away from campus and the resort boasts an annual snowfall of 349″. Also, Steamboat Lake State Park offers touring terrain with maintained trails pretty much all the way to the Wyoming border, so it’s unlikely you’ll have to see the same thing twice.

Where to play during summer:
For mountain biking, hiking and trail running, Howelson Hill is home to 24 miles of non motorized trails. For water activities, the Yampa river flows right through town where students like to raft, tube and SUP.

Culture:
Students like to attend the weekly rodeo in Steamboat, as well as ski joring in the winter as part of one of the oldest winter carnivals in the U.S.

CMC Rifle campus:
Located about 25 miles west of Glenwood, Rifle is home to Rifle Gap State Park and Rifle Falls. CMC’s Rifle campus offers students ample opportunities to explore what Western Colorado has to offer.

What to study: Applied Engineering and Renewable Energy
Rifle’s location just outside of the mountains allows for students to take advantage of the natural gas industry. Recently, Rifle has balanced the extractive energy production with the production of solar energy and now, Rifle is one of the U.S. top producers of solar energy per capita and CMC’s solar production classes have lent a hand to the massive growth.

Where to play—summer:
One word: climb. Rifle is home to the world-famous steep limestone climbing in Rifle Mountain Park. Rifle gap offers motorized boating and swimming fun, and Rifle Falls are quite the site to see.

Culture:
CMC partnered with the CMC Foundation to create a regular series of concerts that bring in musicians such as Hazel Miller.

CMC Edwards campus:
Located in the heart of the Vail Valley, the Edwards campus provides students many opportunities for different outdoor adventures.

What to study: Fire Science and Paramedics, Culinary Arts
The Edwards location hosts an advanced program for students looking to be fire fighters, ski patrol, or EMS personnel. With Beaver Creek and Vail  just 10 minutes to the east, CMC Edwards provides their students with an abundance of opportunities to learn the ins and outs of fine dining and fine cuisine.

Where to play—winter:
Vail and Beaver Creek. Duh. But really, the Edwards campus is smack dab in the middle of these two world class resorts, and students are likely there before class, between class, after class and on the weekends. Looking for backcountry? The Vail Valley provides access to many 10th Mountain Division huts to use as a base for backcountry trips.

Where to play—summer:
The Gore Creek river and the Eagle river provide many options for summer water sports. Mountain biking can be found on Vail and Beaver Creek, on Arrowhead and 20 miles west in Eagle. Vail hosts the Mountain Games every year in June and students can go watch world class athletes compete in kayaking, slack-lining, climbing and more.

Culture:
Vail hosts many free concerts throughout the winter and summer that have brought famous artists such as Michael Franti, Train and OAR to the valley. The Vail International Dance Festival and Tuesday night free concert series at Ford Amphitheater are also things on students’ to-do lists.

It’s obvious why CMC was one of the finalists in our Top Adventure School contest, and we’re excited to pass along what makes this school so adventurous.

Top Adventure School Finalist: Regis University

In our July/August 2015 issue, we had readers vote for what they thought was the most adventurous college, and now we’re back with more valuable information on why these schools made the final rounds. Each finalist shared with us where their students like to play, what their students like to study and what the culture is like at the school.

Regis University:
Denver, Colo. is a hub for outdoor recreation, so it’s no question as to why Regis University made it to the top four round of our Adventure College contest. Regis University is located in the heart of Denver, where bike trails, running trails and the mountains are all within reach. Denver boasts an average of 300 days of sunshine, and more than 850 miles of paved multi-use paths that lead and connect to even more outdoor fun. Denver is frequently named one of the best outdoor cities to live in, and with bike lanes, skateparks, golf courses, and the Platte River running right through the center, Denver is a mecca for the outdoor enthusiasts.

What to study: Environmental science, environmental studies, health and exercise science and environmental biology.
These majors get students outside and in the field, and what better place to get hands-on experience than the Rocky Mountains?

Where to play:
Denver itself has a plethora of options to satisfy outdoor cravings such as 400 miles of signed bike routes or fishing the Platte River, however, Regis University offers students even more opportunities to go explore, such as the Outdoor Adventure Program (OAP). The OAP Program provides students with outdoor trips, necessary equipment (free!), knowledge and skills for students going on their own outdoor excursions. OAP’s 2015 trips include rock climbing, a caving expedition, SUP and summiting a 14er.

Regis also offers incoming students a chance to acquaint themselves with other students through 1st Tracks, a program offered by the OAP. 1st Tracks takes students on trips throughout Colorado during July and August so students can get a feel for the amazing state Colorado is, and start their first year with some new adventurous friends.

In the winter, students looking to get some fresh pow or learn how to ski can take the RTD Ski-n-Ride bus to Eldora, or the Front Range Ski Bus can get you to Loveland and Copper Mountain. For students who don’t have their carpool system locked down yet, Colorado Mountain Express (CME) can take kids from the Convention Center in downtown Denver, to Vail, Beaver Creek, Keystone and Breckenridge.

Culture:
When students aren’t doing awesome things outdoors, they can be found at Highlands Square, Tennyson Street and Olde Town Arvada having fun and enjoying some good food after a long day.

Regis University certainly lives up to its adventurous and expectations, and we’re excited to share their outdoor focused mentality.
